From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-20

As the Lunar World Turns
Friday, April 20, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, like a karmic backlash, all of yesterday's fun, fun, fun turns today to bitter darkness. We have had a long run of 50-50 days, followed by yesterday's all red-ink goodness day. Today the black ink comes home to roost (so to speak, through mixed metaphors we live by). Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Oxen (牛). Calendrical interpretations stress that today's and tomorrow's constellations are the Herdboy and the Weaving Maid. That isn't bad (it's the most popular myth in East Asia). The bad side is the rest: it presages broken marriages, discord, and all manner of family turmoil. Batten down the kinship hatches, people.
[b] Fullness (burp) RF

The jianchu "personality" is Fullness (滿),which sounds better than it is (burp). If you've ever been too full, you know what I mean. On the other hand, it isn't that bad. It's pretty good for big events (burp), but smaller tasks are (in Lunar World, at least) not recommended.

Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today, including Heavenly Virtue (天德), Lunar Virtue (月德), and Timely Virtue (時德). These are always good, but this is a Virtue-filled day.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, two in-between () times, and six auspicious () times. Auspiciousness inflation. What have I been tellin' ya?
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for opening irrigation sluices (開渠), thatched coverings (苫蓋), and moving soil (動土). Think about these. Would you, for instance, have another kind of roof put on your garage or do you interpret this as "any kind of roof." The text won't divulge an answer. You need to figure it out.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the fifth (初五) day of the third lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #19: renwu (壬午). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Metal. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Wood.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for six things, including Meeting Friends (會友) and Moving Residences (移徙). Click the link for the rest.
Friday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
[d] Moving Day RF
We are in the sixth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Friday, April 20 and runs through Friday, May 4. It is called Corn Rain (穀雨). We are in the sixteenth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Floating Weeds Appear (萍始生). It began on Friday, April 20, and runs through Tuesday, April 24.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Lunar Taboo (月忌), Earth Duffel (地囊), and Calamitous Balefulness (灾煞 I love "Earth Duffel," which I sometimes call "Dirt Bag."

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Water (水). The miscellaneous activities are Granary (倉), Pestle (碓), and Storehouse (庫). Nobody knows what they mean.

See You Tomorrow
So, as one of my favorite television shows always had it, "Let's be careful out there." Double black ink isn't that scary. Face it down, and I'll see you back in this space Friday night for a Saturday preview.
