From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-13

As the Lunar World Turns
Friday, April 13, 2018
[a] Preview Cat RF
Whiplash again, people (but the other way 'round). Almost every day is, one-way-or-another, somewhere in the 30-70 realm (there are only a few extremes, but enough, and often enough, to get our attention). Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Neck (亢). Calendrical interpretations stress that it is um, bad. It's worse than a pain in the, er, neck. It is seen as an unlucky day to undertake much of anything but especially construction projects. Combat will end in disaster (think about that, even in terms of fighting with colleagues). And don't even think about getting married. It's bad, people (at least in Lunar World).
[b] Planting, Cultivating RF

The jianchu "personality" is Danger (), and it is printed in red ink. That sounds pretty good, but be careful. Danger presents...dangerous opportunities, but don't go too far (and stay on the speed limit).
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Maternal Granary (母倉) and Ten Spirits (十靈). They're good (by definition).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and six auspicious () times. Auspiciousness inflation. I've been tellin' ya. It's inflation.
[c] Fishing RF
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Planting and Cultivating (栽種) and Marriage Alliances (嫁娶). Think about these.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-eighth (廿八) day of the second lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #12: yihai (乙亥). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Fire (火). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Fire. Today is Fire and tomorrow is Water.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for Bubbling and Bathing (沐浴), Positioning Beds (安牀), Fishing (取魚), and Livestock Payments (納畜). Take a nice, warm bath...and then go give your father-in-law those sheep you owe him.
Friday's Lunar Calendar
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the fifth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, April 4 and runs April 19. It is called Qingming (清明). We are in the fourteenth of the five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Moles Become Quails (桐始華), and began on Tuesday, April 10, and runs through Saturday, April 14.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
Among the baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Doubled Days (重日) and Heavenly Thief (天賊). And today marks the return of one of the most terrifying of all: Natatorial Disaster (游禍). It just seemed like a nice, relaxing swim in the river, didn't it? And then the Water Ghost () appeared. Be very scared (they go for the ankles).

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Copse (林)—no, not Corpse (尸). The miscellaneous activities are Pestle (碓), Bed (牀), and Mortar (磨). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] Thicket RF
See You Tomorrow
So, enjoy reverse whiplash (and benefit from "danger" without being scarred by it). And don't go near the water (at least if you are in southern China).
