From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-08

As the Lunar World Turns
Sunday, April 8, 2018
[a] Black-White-Gray Preview Cats RF
Well, it's a 100% black-ink, "negative" day in Lunar World. But it's really not all bad. More like gray...or black and white. Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Asterism (星). Calendrical interpretations stress that, while printed in black ink, it is really quite a mixed bag. Building or construction work leads to good results, but a marriage will spell little but doom (er, in Lunar World). And here is the most ominous line of all: even the Star of Confucius will not dispel such negative portents.
[b] Fullness RF

The jianchu "personality" is Fullness (滿), and this one isn't half-bad, either (well, maybe it is actually half-bad). Even though it is printed in black, it's almost entirely good, and filled to the brim like an overflowing treasury. Think about an enormous, wonderful meal. Burp. Excuse me. And that is the downside of Fullness. It's almost all good, though, people (at least in Lunar World).
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today, including Generational Branch (歲支), Three Linkages (三合), and Timely Virtue (時德). They're great.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and fully six auspicious () times. Auspiciousness inflation, I'm tellin' ya.
Things to Avoid
[c] New Boats RF
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Binding Nets (結網), New Boats (新船), and Entering Water (進水). Think about these. They express a southeast Chinese (in particular) fear of water and potential death. Be wary.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-third (廿三) day of the second lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #7: gengwu (庚戊). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Earth (土). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Fire. Today is Earth, and tomorrow is Earth.
[d] Felling Timber RF

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for fully twelve different things, including Meeting Friends (會友), Haircuts (理髮), Felling Timber (伐木), and Positioning Graves (安葬).
Sunday's Lunar Calendar

Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the fifth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, April 4 and runs April 19. It is called Qingming (清明). We are in the thirteenth of the five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Paulownia Blooms (桐始華), and began on Thursday April 4, and runs through Monday April 9.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are diverse. Among them are Lunar Taboo (月忌) and Disastrous Balefulness (灾煞).

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Person (人) and Water (水). The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Mortar (磨), and Pestle (碓). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] Divination RF
See You Tomorrow
So, people, don't go hide behind a tree until this day is over. It provides (Lunar World-style) a whole passel of opportunities. And, after spending a day in the scrum, I'll see you back here on Sunday night for a Monday preview.
