From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-18

As the Lunar World Turns
Wednesday, April 18, 2018
[a] Kitten Preview RF
50-50, people. Surprised? You shouldn't be. Almost every day is like that. Let's take a closer look at Wednesday in Lunar World.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
[b] Soil RF
Today's "constellation personality" is Winnowing Basket (). Calendrical interpretations stress that it is (at least in our era) a time of wondrous good fortune. Everything from building to burial is auspicious. This is good stuff, people.

The jianchu "personality" is Establish (見),and it is better than it looks. Although it is printed in black ink, it is a great day to get "stuff" underway. To my mind, this is a 70-30 (positive) day, so run with it.

Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Lunar Kindness (月恩) and Heavenly Kindness (天恩). "Kindness" is the theme of the day.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
[c] Metal RF
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and six auspicious () times. Seriously, who thinks that there is not "auspiciousness inflation" here?

Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Moving Soil (動土) and Mourning Visits (行喪). Avoid them (yes, don't even think about revving up the John Deere earth mover...and wait until tomorrow to pay your respects). It's complicated.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the third (初三) day of the third lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #17: gengchen (庚辰). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Earth. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Metal.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Bifurcation RF
It's a solid day for only two (big, black-ink, big-character things): Unhitching and Unloading (拆卸) and Sweeping Rooms (掃舎).
Wednesday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the fifth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, April 4 and runs April 19. It is called Qingming (清明). We are in the fifteenth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Rainbows Begin to be Seen (虹始見), and it began on Sunday, April 15, and runs through Thursday, April 19.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Generational Destruction (歲破), Water Scar (水痕), Soil Palace (土府), and Three Mournings (三喪). They are baleful, but they are the flip side, so to speak, of the "auspicious stars" of section two.

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Ghost (鬼). The miscellaneous activities are Pestle (碓), Perch (栖), and Mortar (磨). Nobody knows what they mean. Seriously, people, I am not just saying that; I have spent thirty years trying to get answers in China (and beyond).
[e] Perch RF
See You Tomorrow
So...winnow your basket...and establish. I will see you back here on Wednesday night for Thursday's preview of Lunar World.
