From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-23

As the Lunar World Turns
Monday, April 23, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
We are remain in our state of Lunar World normalcy. The constellation is inauspicious and the jianchu cycle is auspicious. A little "bad" mixed with a little "good" (just like life). Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is black-ink Danger (危). Calendrical interpretations stress that it is bleak and worrisome. By land or by sea...pretty much everything is bad.
[b] Cat Grasp RF

The jianchu "personality" is red-ink Grasp (). It is a power-based day for getting things done. All good—and all in contrast to the other "day personality" today (just like a "normal" day).

Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are four beneficent asterisms today: Heavenly Nobility (天貴), Six Linkages (六合), Precious Rays (寶光), and Not General (不將). They're good; really good.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. Better, but we haven't seen a 4-4-4 day in a long, long, long time.

Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for four big, bad things: Planting and Cultivating (栽種), Timely Injections (時插), Moving Soil (動土), and Repairing Granaries (修倉). Think about these, but don't put off that injection if you really need it tomorrow (but maybe get your shingles shot today?...nope, my professional opinion is to get the shot, if you need it...and then rationalize it, as people have done in China for the past twenty centuries or more). Cynical? Nope. I call it "history" and "culture."
[c] Timely Injecations RF

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the eighth (初八) day of the third lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #22: yiyou (乙酉). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Water (). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Water. Today is Water, and tomorrow is Earth.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for sixteen different things, including Haircuts and Styling (理髮) Visiting the Doctor (醫病), Raising Beams (上樑), and Capturing Stuff (捕捉). Click the link for the rest!
Monday's Lunar Calendar
[d] Widespread Pond RF

Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the sixth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Friday, April 20 and runs through Friday, May 4. It is called Corn Rain (穀雨). We are in the sixteenth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Floating Weeds Appear (萍始生). It began on Friday, April 20, and runs through Tuesday, April 24.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are plentiful (five of 'em): Upper Amputee (上兀), Five Separations (五離), Five Voids (五虛), Widespread Pond (咸池), and Soil Charm (土符). They're bad. Really bad.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omen is Person (人)—just one today. The miscellaneous activities are Gate (門), Mortar (磨), and Pestle (碓). Nobody knows what they mean. Devoted readers know that I have thirty years of "not kidding" behind that assertion.

See You Tomorrow
Keep your head squarely on your shoulders, people, and grasp, grasp (in a good way). I'll see you back here tomorrow night for a look at Tuesday in Lunar World.
