From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-18

As the Lunar World Turns

Monday's Lunar Calendar
[a] Cat Preview RF
It's a dark, black-ink day, but there is at least a little more nuance within than might be expected at first glance. Moreover, we say goodbye to our even parallels of personalities. For the last twelve days, the first constellation personality has been paired with the first jianchu personality. Then the seconds, and the thirds. Not it is the twelfths, and tomorrow, while the twenty-eight "constellation" personalities continue churning on, the jianchu will reset at one.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
[b] Closed RF
Today's "constellation personality" is Danger (危). It is the twelfth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that it is intensely negative. Travelers, in particular, will be assailed on land and water.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
The jianchu "personality" is Closed (閉). It is the twelfth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. It is seen as a time for burial and concealment, but it is not unmitigatedly bad. You see, looking inward has its time and place, doesn't it? Curl up with a good book watch the World Cup, or enjoy a second cup of coffee at the breakfast table. It'll all be o.k.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Generational Emolument (歲祿) and Jade Characters (玉字). They're good. The latter does not occur very often, and it is an interesting concept ("Jade Kanji").

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, two in-between () times, and six auspicious () times.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[d] Mixing Sauces RF
It's a bad day for Mixing Sauces (合醬) and Distant Journeys (遠行). And watch out for the dangers (see above) if you travel (er, in Lunar World).
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the fifth (初五) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #18: xinsi (辛巳). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Metal. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Wood.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for six things today, including: Tailoring (裁衣), Raising Livestock (牧養), and Patching and Plugging (補賽) all of those troublesome holes and caves around your sprawling property. Click the link for the rest.
[d] Snake Mouth RF
Monday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the ninth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Wednesday, June 6 and runs through Wednesday, June 20. It is called Grain in Ear (芒種). We are in the twenty-seventh of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Mockingbird Loses Voice (反舌無聲). It began on Monday, June 16 and runs through Friday, June 20.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Poplar Taboo (楊忌), Doubled Days (重日), and Snake Mouth (蛇口). They should all scare you with their balefulness, but what about that last one?
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omen is Bifurcation (丫). The miscellaneous activities are Kitchen (廚), Bed (牀), and Stove (灶). Nobody knows what they mean.
See You Tomorrow
O.k., look inward, people, and watch out for the travel dangers. I'll see you back here on Monday night with a preview of Tuesday in Lunar World.
