From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-01

As the Lunar World Turns
Friday, June 1, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
O.k., people. We're starting "June," and that Gregorian technicality has nothing to do with Lunar World. Instead, it's even bigger (the first day of the cycle of sixty, and that is yuuuuuge). In another sense, that day has a few challenges (even though it looks "50-50"). Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Ghost (鬼). Calendrical interpretations stress that it ain't that good (as we are said to say back home). It is sometimes called "Ghost Carriage," and the linked ideas are death, demons, and general misery. Marriage, in particular, is to be avoided (but venerating ancestors is all to the good).
[b] Danger RF

The jianchu "personality" is Danger (), and it is printed in red ink (at least for this section of the calendar). Traditional calendars emphasize that the day is like climbing a treacherous mountain (the wind is blowing and peril is everywhere). It's hard to imagine why that kind of day is printed in red ink. One traditional bit of calendrical advice is to "be joyous and drink wine—all else is of little use."
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Lunar Vacancy (月日), Entering Spirits (進神), and Not General (不將).

Auspicious Times
[c] Granaries RF
(Section Three)
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. I like 4-4-4 better, but it's not about me.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Opening Granaries (開倉), Capital Outlay (出財), and Divinatory Inquiries (問卜). The first two are often interpreted, especially in Hong Kong, to mean "reaching into savings."

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the eighteenth () day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #1: jiazi (甲子). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Water. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Metal.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Taking-up Residence RF
It's a solid day for twelve different things, including Venerating Ancestors (祭祀), Meeting Friends (會友), Taking-up Residence (入宅), and Starting Fires (出火). Just be sure that you are doing so legally with regard to the last two.
Friday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eighth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Monday, May 21 and runs through Monday, June 4. It is called Grain Full (小滿). We are in the twenty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Harvest Season Arrives (麥秋至). This is an odd phrase for the beginning of June, and it is usually written Slight Heat Arrives or Grain Ripens (小暑至). It began on Thursday, May 31, and runs through Monday, June 4

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Five Vacancies (五虛), Rat Mouth (鼠口), Heavenly Official (天吏), and White Tiger (白虎). These are formidably baleful, people.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Fire (火). The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Pestle (碓), and Gate (門). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] White Tiger RF
See You Tomorrow
O.k., but your collar up as you face the fierce winds of Friday. You'll make it down the mountain, and I'll see you back here on Friday night for a preview of Saturday in Lunar World.
