From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-09

As the Lunar World Turns
Saturday, June 9, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, it's a black tie day, and that is not an especially good thing (it's black ink, as in a tie-dyed t-shirt). If you were getting used to "50-50" normalcy, now yon thundercloud looms, and is threatening to vent its liquor. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Foundation (氐). Well how bad could that be? It is the third of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that this constellation is payback for not paying proper attention to ritual. It bodes ill in quite formidable (foundational?) ways—if you are traveling by boat, it will sink (say the traditional calendars). Children of a marriage on this day will be poor. Need I go on? It's pretty bleak (in Lunar World).

The jianchu "personality" is Fullness (滿). It is the xxx of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. It's really not that bad, with images of overflowing banquet tables and wonder. Wedding receptions (and college alumni/alumnae gatherings) are perfect. There's only one real downside (burp). Don't overdo it (in Lunar World).
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Generational Horse (歲馬), Fortunate Virtue (福德), and Lunar Vacancy (月空).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and five auspicious () times.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Opening Irrigation Sluices (開渠), Putting-into Water (放水), and Positioning Beds (安牀).
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the ninth (初九) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #9: renshen (壬申). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Wood. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Metal.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for twelve different things today, including Moving Residences (移徙), Raising Beams (上樑), and Haircuts (理髮). Click the link for the others!

Saturday's Lunar Calendar
 Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the ninth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Wednesday, June 6 and runs through Wednesday, June 20. It is called Grain in Ear (芒種). We are in the twenty-fifth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Mantids Hatch (螳螂生). It began on Wednesday, June 6, and runs through Sunday, June 10.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Yin General (陰將), Without Emolument (無祿), Orphan Dawn (孤辰), and Five Voids (無虛).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Earth (地). The miscellaneous activities are Granary (倉), Furnace (爐), and Storehouse (庫). Nobody knows what they mean.

See You Tomorrow
Well, people, stay out of the water, and don't overindulge. You'll get through this. I'll see you back here on Saturday night for a preview of Sunday in Lunar World.
