We will be reading short essays from my
blog for Mondays. These range from necessary information
for class in the first half of the term (very important) to essays
that are meant to stimulate broad thinking about our class materials.
All items are required and will be on quizzes and tests.
Syllabic Cycles—Introduction, a-d (read all four posts, not just the first one—but go quickly).
Check the lunar calendar every day (posted at midnight). This link is to the RSQ home page. Just scroll down until you see the calendar if it is not right there!
Week Two—September 5
Quotidian Quizzes—Introduction, a-h (skim the first four posts, but read the last four carefully (they get to the heart of our course).

Read the post and think about the many dimensions of "history." It is never, ever, just a timeline. We'll discuss the implications in class

All ClassesThe Thousand-Ask Question You need to read all three posts (important).
This is an important concept that will help you with a great deal of your work. Note that, even though the posts speak of ethnographic inquiry (in-person questioning), the skill can be turned toward historical study and, yes, translation. We'll discuss these matters in class.
Week Ten—October 31

Exilic Response. Read this post carefully, and think about examples.
Take a quick look at these two examples of what Rob calls "exilic response."

All Classes (these posts should help you think more about how structures are at work at all levels in our lives, and in the lives of people we study historically)
Week Thirteen—November 21

Just a bit more about structure, history, and culture. Please not that these posts were written in 2012 (in a very different political world). The "structural" issues persist, though.
(there are seventeen posts in all...but you don't need to read those)
Week Fifteen—December 5
"Calendars and Almanacs" (.pdf file that I sent to you on September 13.
