From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-02

As the Lunar World Turns

[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, at least we're back to a twisted kind of normalcy today, people. It's starkly "50-50," the way such "50-50" days "should" be. The Willows are dark and scary, while "completion" shines its bright light on the (Lunar) World. Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
[b] Willow RF
Today's "constellation personality" is Willow (柳). Calendrical interpretations stress that it really, terribly, gloomily, suppressingly, weepingly...bad. Further, those calendars stress that nothing should be undertaken, not even funerals. Everything presages discord, misery, and ruin.

The jianchu "personality" is Completion (成). It is wonderfully, glowingly wonderful—every bit as good as Willow is bad. Traditional calendars note that it is a good day for just about everything except gossip. And, with those extremes clearly set forth, you'll have to figure out how to proceed during this twenty-four hour segment in Lunar World.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are four beneficent asterisms today: Lunar Virtue (月德), Linked Days (合日), Jade Hall (玉堂), and Heavenly Happiness (天喜). They're just dripping with red-ink goodness.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, two in-between () times, and fully six auspicious () times. Wow. That's a lot of auspiciousness (downright inflationary, really).
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Planting and Cultivating (栽種), Timely Injections (時插), Stove Work (作灶), and Hunting (田獵). Think about these. They run the gamut of activities (so avoid them).

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the nineteenth (十九) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #2: yichou (乙丑). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Metal. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Fire.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Study Break RF
It's a solid day for sixteen different things, including Studying (入學), Meeting Friends (會友), Fermenting Beverages (醞釀), and Repairing and Constructing (修造). Click the link for the other twelve.
Saturday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eighth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Monday, May 21 and runs through Monday, June 4. It is called Grain Full (小滿). We are in the twenty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Harvest Season Arrives (麥秋至). This is an odd phrase for the beginning of June, and it is usually written Slight Heat Arrives or Grain Ripens (小暑至). It began on Thursday, May 31, and runs through Monday, June 4

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Debt Not (債不), which is always good advice, even in a baleful star, Upper Amputee (上兀), Fire Star (火星), Mutual Repression (厭對), and Return Taboo (歸忌). These are pretty "baleful," but none more so than Mutual Repression.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Mountain (山). The miscellaneous activities are Toilet (厠), Mortar (磨), and Pestle (碓). Nobody knows what they mean (and that glib assessment is built upon thirty years of calendrical fieldwork). Still, common sense would tell you to keep the toilet away from the mortar and pestle, right?
[e] Toilet RF
See You Tomorrow
O.k., people, it's going to be an interesting ride. The worst-of-the-worst meets the best-of-the-best. Do your own best, and I'll see you back here on Saturday night for a preview of Sunday in Lunar World.
