From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-16

[a] Cat Preview RF
We're back to skinny little day columns, people, and this one looks bad, without being nearly as bad as all that (so to speak). Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Weaving Maiden (女). It is the tenth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that it is a positive stretch of time. Yet today's versions (and these are several centuries old, I will note) are oddly negative. Family disputes, quarrels among friends, epidemics, diseases (especially of the bowels), and so forth lie on the horizon.
[b] Treasury RF
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
The jianchu "personality" is Receive (收). It is the tenth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. It is printed in black ink, yet it really isn't half-bad. It is (traditionally) the day that the Emperor of Heaven's treasures are received. In modern parlance, that means opening the granaries, carrying on trade, holding weddings, and digging foundations are all fortunate. Not (half) bad stuff.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Generational Branch (歲支) and Virtuous Days (德日).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are five inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and four auspicious () times. Well, well. That is a bit of a surprise.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[c] Hunting RF
It's a bad day for Boring Wells (穿井) and Opening Ponds (開池). There's just something about water on your own property today. Just (Don't) Do It.
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the third (初三) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #16: jimao (己卯). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Earth (土). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Earth. Today is Earth, and tomorrow is Metal.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for only three things today: Cash Payments (納財), Trapping (捕捉), and Hunting (田獵). You might need to adapt the second and third activities to fit your (sub)urban lifestyle.
Saturday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the ninth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Wednesday, June 6 and runs through Wednesday, June 20. It is called Grain in Ear (芒種). We are in the twenty-seventh of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Mockingbird Loses Voice (反舌無聲). It began today, on Monday, June 16, and runs through Friday, June 20.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Water Scar (水痕) and Classified Balefulness (班煞).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Landmass (州). The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Gate (門), and Great (大). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] Receive RF
See You Tomorrow
So set your phones to Receive mode, and try to think about it as a (generally) good thing (although it is pretty much better to give). I'll see you back here Saturday night for a preview of Sunday in Lunar World.
