From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-17

As the Lunar World Turns
Sunday, June 17, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
It's a special sort of whipsaw day on Sunday. Gloomy and foreboding meets sunny and optimistic. If that doesn't make you scratch your head in wonder, I don't know what will. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Void (虛). It is the eleventh of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that it originally signified a tomb or grave. Today's interpretations bode ill: domestic quarrels, bad luck surrounding construction projects, tigers snatching up infants...you know, the usual stuff.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Void RF
The jianchu "personality" is Open (). It is the eleventh of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. It's as good as it looks and sounds. It's a good day for going on short journeys, attending to correspondence, practicing music and painting, and (of course) studying. Be open!
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Timely Virtue (時德) and Engendered Vapor (生氣). Good stuff. We don't see these every day.
Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
Get this. There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and six auspicious () times. Are you kidding me?
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[c] Sweeping RF
It's a bad day for Binding Nets (結網) and Felling Timber (伐木). If you're an enterprising outdoors-person, this is not your day.
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the fourth (初四) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #17: gengchen (庚辰). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Earth. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Metal.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for only two big things today: Venerating Ancestors (祭祀) and Sweeping Rooms (掃舎). If you are new to the calendar, you might think that every day is a good day for venerating the ol' predecessors. Nope. Most are, but not all of 'em (just to keep you on your sacrificial toes).
Sunday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
[d] Perch RF
We are in the ninth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Wednesday, June 6 and runs through Wednesday, June 20. It is called Grain in Ear (芒種). We are in the twenty-seventh of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Mockingbird Loses Voice (反舌無聲). It began on Monday, June 16 and runs through Friday, June 20.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Generational Destruction (歲破), Mysterious Days (密日), Five Voids (五虛), and Everything General (俱將).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omen (just one) is Bifurcation (丫). The miscellaneous activities are Pestle (碓), Perch (栖), and Mortar (磨). Nobody knows what they mean, although two of them are used together in regular life, right?
See You Tomorrow
O.k., be open, people, and watch out for those voids. I'll see you back here on Sunday night for a preview of Monday in Lunar World.
