From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 07-09

As the Lunar World Turns
Monday, July 9, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, it's a strange sort of "50-50" that confronts us today, people. Bad ain't quite that bad...and good...ain't quite that good. Huh? Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Heart-Mind (心). It is the fifth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that, while it is generally unlucky (in Lunar World), the overall positive nature of the character mitigates it somewhat.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Granary RF
The jianchu "personality" is Danger (). It is the eighth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. The irony here is that it is the one character that appears in both the "constellation personalities" and the jianchu cycle. In the former, it is printed in black. In the latter (here) it is red. Nevertheless, even though it is in red-ink, it just isn't that good. Watch yourself (traditional calendars say to stay home and drink wine).
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are four beneficent asterisms today: Generational Branch (歲支), Three Linkages (三合), Maternal Granary (母倉), and Ten Spirits (十靈). They're all red-ink good, but, really, what could be better than Maternal Granary? It's the mother of all granaries (have some more...take another helping).
Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
[c] Irrigation RF
Brace yourself. There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, five in-between () times, and four auspicious () times. Whoa.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Opening Irrigation Sluices (開渠), Putting-into Water (放水), Venerating Ancestors (祭祀), and Inquiring-into Fortune (祈福)
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-sixth (廿六) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #39: renyin (壬寅). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Metal (金). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Earth. Today is Metal, and tomorrow is Metal.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Natatorium RF
It's a solid day for sixteen different things today, including: Studying (入學), Meeting Friends (會友), Taking-up Residence (入宅), and Haircuts (理髮). Click the link for the twelve others. They'll keep; you busy all day long.
Monday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eleventh of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Saturday, July 7 and runs through Saturday, July 21. It is called Slight Heat (小暑). We are in the thirty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Warm Winds Arrive (溫風至). It began on Monday, July 2 and runs through Friday, July 6.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Water Scar (水痕), Lower Amputee (下兀), Debt Not (債不), Great Loss-Void (大亡空), and my "favorite," Natatorial Calamity (游禍). Just in case you're not up-to-date on Natatoria, a more common translation might be "Swimming Disaster" (watch our for the Water Ghosts (水鬼), people. They're slippery...and dangerous (I hear, in southern China).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens is Bifurcation (丫), and that's it. The miscellaneous activities are Furnace (爐), Storehouse (庫), and Granary (倉). Nobody knows what they mean, but these at least seem to be somewhat related
See You Tomorrow
So, folks, don't get your highs too high or your lows too low. I'll see you back here on Monday night for a quick preview of Tuesday in Lunar World.
