From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 07-16

As the Lunar World Turns

[a] Cat Preview RF
O.k., it's all black-ink inauspiciousness for Monday. Is there even any reason to get out of bed tomorrow? Well, certainly. There is no such thing as all-bad (or all-good). Just like real life. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Danger (危). It is the twelfth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars have "Danger" in both the constellation personalities and the jianchu personalities. The former is printed in black ink and the latter in red. Both are pretty bad, though, and this one definitely is. Stay away from traveling on land or water (traditional almanacs do not mention air). Stay safe, people.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Fullness RF
The jianchu "personality" is Fullness (滿). It is the third of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. Although it is printed it in black ink, it's really pretty darned good. Big events, such as weddings, receptions, conferences, and so forth, are ideal. The only problem with Fullness? Well, indigestion and hangovers. Don't get too full (that's why it's printed in black ink).
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are four beneficent asterisms today: Heavenly Lunarity (天月), Exemplary Linkage (德合), Phoenix (鳳凰), and Entering Spirits (進神).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and five auspicious () times.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Acupuncture and Moxibustion (針灸), Exorcisisms (除靈), Completing Clothing (除服), and Mourning Visits (行喪)
Just Plain Counting
[c] Soil RF
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the third (初三) day of the sixth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #46: jiyou (己酉). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Earth (土). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Earth. Today is Earth, and tomorrow is Metal.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for sixteen different things today, including: Marriage Engagements (嫁娶), Grain Taxes (納采), Going to Market (開市), and Repairing and Constructing (修造). Click the link for the other twelve (and go get a haircut before you get married...check it out).
Monday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
[d] Bifurcation RF
We are in the eleventh of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Saturday, July 7 and runs through Saturday, July 21. It is called Slight Heat (小暑). We are in the thirty-second of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Crickets Come Into Walls (蟋蟀居壁). It began on Thursday, July 12 and runs through Monday, July 16.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Repeat Mourning (重喪), Chicken Mouth (雞口), Disastrous Balefulness (灾煞), Blood Taboo (血忌), and Repeat Mourning (復日). Think of them as movie titles, posters, and trailers. Chicken Mouth? I prefer to think of it as Fowl Mouth (with a twist upon Hitchcock's The Birds).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Mountain (山). The miscellaneous activities are Gate (門), Great (大), and Divination (占). Nobody knows what they mean, and the middle one should be proof of that. Great (big)? Even Divination. Almost all of these categories are things around the house. Yet, every once-in-awhile, an adjective shows up. So much for the thirty years of "informants" who have told me that section eight is about things to do around the house. O.k., then. Let's do "Great." It actually sounds pretty darned good.
See You Tomorrow
O.k., folks. Avoid danger, but be great. Have a great day, and I'll see you back here on Monday night for a preview of Tuesday in Lunar World.
