From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 07-05

As the Lunar World Turns
Thursday, July 5, 2018

[a] Cat Preview RF
It's an unusual, three-wide day-column today, and it's gooooooood. The numbers are in your favor (in Lunar World), so let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Horn (). It is the first of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that everything gets going again, like a new start. It's a good day for weddings, construction, and all sorts of activities.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Horn RF
The jianchu "personality" is Decide (), and it's even better. It is the fifth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle, and it implies action. Get things moving. Start that draft...or diet (those hot dogs from yesterday won't go away on their own...er, well, they will, but you get my point). Don't sit around. This is an action day.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Generational Exemplarity (歲德), Lunar Kindness (月恩), and Not General (不將). Thank 'em. They're you're lucky asterisms.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. Whatever happened to 4-4-4?
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[c] Planting and Cultivating RF
It's a bad day for Buying Land (買田), Setting-up Industry (置業), and Planting and Cultivating (栽種)
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-second (廿二) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #35: wuxu (戊戌). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Fire. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Wood.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for twelve different things today, including: Studying (入學), Meeting Friends (會友), Moving Residences (移徙), and Raising Beams (上樑). Click the link for the other eight. They're "appropriate" (宜).
Thursday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
[d] Study RF
We are in the tenth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, June 21 and runs through Friday, July 6. It is called Summer Arrives or, of course, Summer Solstice (夏至). We are in the thirtieth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Crowdipper Flourishes (半夏生). It began on Monday, July 2 and runs through Friday, July 6.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Small Loss-Void (小亡空), Without Emolument (無祿), and Heavenly Punishment (天刑). I've asked you to think about them as movie titles. Let's take it a step further, and imagine the trailers for these movies. Just try.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Person (人) and Fire (火). The miscellaneous activities are Edifice (房), Perch (栖), and Bed (牀). Nobody knows what they mean.
See You Tomorrow
Bask in the red-ink glow of this day, people. Another one like it won't reappear for at least...a few days. I'll see you back here on Thursday night for a preview of Friday in Lunar World.
