From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 07-06

As the Lunar World Turns
Friday, July 6, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
O.k., folks. This skinny little day-colmn packs a bit of a "50-50" punch. It's a pain in the neck meeting a reach for the sky. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Neck (亢). It is the second of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that it's bad, ominous, fearful, and so forth. Most activities (especially big ones) are to be avoided.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Grasp RF
The jianchu "personality" is Grasp (). It is the sixth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle, and it is rosy red-ink good. Stretch your capabilities (bend your neck...safely), and enjoy going beyond your limits (in Lunar World, of course.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Four Facings (四相) and Fortunate Exemplarity (福德). They're good (by definition), but I also want to point out that these two don't appear too often on the big ol' calendar. Enjoy them while they're here.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are five inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, two in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. That doesn't happen every day. Good, bad, and little in-between. Interesting.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Getting Married (嫁娶) and Discarding Clothing (除服). So much for the floral bouquet and kickin' off the shoes at the wedding dance.
[c] Discarding Clothing RF
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-third (廿三) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #36: jihai (己亥). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Wood. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Earth.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for eight different things today, including: Venerating Ancestors (祭祀), Inquiring-into Fortune (祈福), Trapping (捕捉), Fishing (取魚), and Binding Nets (結網). Click the link for the others.
Friday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
[d] Hog Mouth RF
We are in the tenth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, June 21 and runs through Friday, July 6. It is called Summer Arrives or, of course, Summer Solstice (夏至). We are in the thirtieth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Crowdipper Flourishes (半夏生). It began on Monday, July 2 and runs through Friday, July 6.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Hog Mouth (豬口), Doubled Days (重日), and Plundered Balefulness (劫煞). Movie posters; movie trailers. Think about what they'd be like on the big screen.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Mountain (山). The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Bed (牀), and Gate (門). Nobody knows what they mean.
See You Tomorrow
O.k., grasp for the heavens, people, and be careful in that neck of the woods. I'll see you back here Friday night for a preview of Saturday in Lunar World.
