From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 05-28

As the Lunar World Turns
Monday, May 28, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
O.k., we're back. After whipping toward the auspicious, and right back toward the inauspicious, we return to relative balance on Monday in Lunar World. In fact, even the black ink "leans auspicious" on this solid day. Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Net (). Calendrical interpretations stress that its name comes from the cluster of stars in the Hyades and Pleiades, which can resemble a hunting net. Even today, the idea echoes an earlier world of natural bounty, with overflowing nets of fish and game (and no concerns with over-hunting or over-fishing. In today's Lunar World, the idea is that you will "net" auspiciousness throughout the day.
[b] Netted Bounty RF

The jianchu "personality" is Level (平). Although it is printed in black ink, it ain't half bad (as we are said to say back home). It is a good day for weddings, receptions, conferences, meetings, and so forth (maybe even a Memorial Day parade, perhaps). So why the black ink? Well, maybe because "level" or "flat" might be a little bit boring (I protest if you are thinking of my beloved eastern North Dakota). Flat/boring is just one way to look at it. But maybe it is also because a "Level" day is just a bad day for some kinds of activity, such as planting, digging ditches, and opening irrigation sluices.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Generational Horse (歲馬) and Lunar Kindness (月恩).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
[c] Positioning Beds RF
There are five inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, two in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. Wow. Feast or famine.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Binding Nets (結網) and Positioning Beds (安牀) for geomantic efficiency. Think about these, and ponder why "Binding Nets" would be a bad thing to do on a "Net" day.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the fourteenth (十四) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #57: gengshen (庚申). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Fire. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Wood.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Meeting Friends RF
It's a solid day for eight different things, including Meeting Friends (會友), Going Out (出行) and Going to Market (開市), just like "This little piggy..." Click the link for the rest!
Monday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eighth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Monday, May 21 and runs through Monday, June 4. It is called Grain Full (小滿). We are in the twenty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Waving Grasses Wither (靡草死). It began on Saturday, May 26, and runs through Wednesday, May 30.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Lunar Taboo (月忌), Lunar Punishment (月刑), and Blood Taboo (血忌). All I can say is they pack a big punch in the Lunar and Taboo categories.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Heaven (天). The miscellaneous activities are Pestle (碓), Furnace (爐), and Mortar (磨). Nobody knows what they mean.

See You Tomorrow
Monday brings confused signals in world calendars. It is a day of contemplation for many of us, but also a "summer" holiday, if that makes any sense. In Lunar World, its a pretty solid "50-50" day, as we have seen. I will see you back here for on Monday night for a preview of Tuesday in Lunar World.
