From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 05-06

As the Lunar World Turns
Sunday, May 6, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, what did you expect, people. It's 50-50. The twist today is that yesterday's positive jianchu "personality" has been repeated. Yes. Once in a while, one of them gets two days in a row. It's still "a little bad and a little good" (sort of like life), but today it appears in a slightly repetitive way.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
[b] Buying Land RF
Today's "constellation personality" is Asterism (星). Calendrical interpretations stress that it is "generally unlucky." Building or construction projects can be positive, but marriages (or burials) are disastrous (um, in Lunar World, at least).

The jianchu "personality" is Grasp (), just like yesterday. Reach for the stars, people (get it?)...
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Generational Virtue (歲德), Releasing Spirits (解神), and Not General (不將). They're good (but a little bit obscure).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
[c] Wood RF
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. Hmmm. I'll let this one go (but note that we haven't seen five inauspicious times for a long stretch.

Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Buying Land (買田), Setting-up Industry (置業), and Eating Dog (吃犬). I am an animal lover and, while I embrace the third one, I really don't want to discuss the need to have it on the calendar.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the xxx () day of the third lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #21: wuxu (戊戌). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
[d] Meeting Friends RF
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Wood. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Water.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for twelve different things, including Meeting Friends (會友), Haircuts (理髮), and Repairing and Constructing (修造). Click the link to see the other nine (they're worth it).
Sunday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the sixth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Saturday, May 5 and runs through Sunday, May 20. It is called Beginning of Summer (). We are in the eighteenth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Little Frogs Peep (螻蟈鳴). It began on Saturday, May 5, and runs through Wednesday, May 9.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Mysterious Days (密日), Without Emolument (無祿), Small Squander (小耗), and Heavenly Thief (天賊). Think these over. Without emolument (salary)? Really?
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

[e] Feline Thief RF
Today's miscellaneous omens are Person (人) and Earth (地). The miscellaneous activities are Edifice (房), Perch (栖), and Bed (牀). Nobody knows what they mean.

See You Tomorrow
O.k., good stuff. Grasp, listen to little frogs peep, and watch out for that heavenly thief. I'll see you back here Sunday night for a preview of Monday in Lunar World.
