From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 05-26

As the Lunar World Turns

[a] Cat Preview RF
Good stuff people. There aren't too many times when double-red pops up within just a few days (o.k., it isn't rare, but it is a peculiar kind of Lunar World treat). Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Stomach (). Calendrical interpretations stress that that, although it has penal origins (yup, I'm talkin' incarceration), it has taken on distinctly positive senses in recent centuries.
[b] Stomach RF

Today's outlook speaks of accumulation of wealth and good fortune. Indeed, children born of marriages on this day will be acquaintances of the emperor. I prefer to think of it in a positive sense, too, but "Stomach's" prison origins remind me of the jovial ex-felon who, when asked about previous work experience, answered "I worked for the state...and I have paperwork signed by the governor."

The jianchu "personality" is Discard (), and it is a favorite among those of us who think removing and recycling and just generally shedding the big, creeping excess that clings to our lives like a deer tick, engine sludge, or toe fungus. Just Eschew It.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Generational Virtue (歲德) and Ten Spirits (十靈). Mmmm. Red character crunchy goodness.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. Close enough.

Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[c] Roofing RF
It's a bad day for Setting up Production (置產) and Thatched Coverings (苫蓋). Think about these, and how they might relate to your life in a twenty-first century society. You may not "thatch," but should you have regular roofing done today (in Lunar World)?

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twelfth (十二) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #55: wuwu (戊午). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Fire (火). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Earth. Today is Fire, and tomorrow is Fire.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Waving Grasses RF
It's a solid day for six different things, including Going Out and about (出行) Haircuts and Hair Styling (理髮), and Moving Soil (動土). Click the links for the rest!
Saturday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eighth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Monday, May 21 and runs through Monday, June 4. It is called Grain Full (小滿). We are in the twenty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Waving Grasses Wither (靡草死). It began on Saturday, May 26, and runs through Wednesday, May 30.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Widespread Pond (咸池) and Horse Mouth (馬口). You may be thinking about Mr. Ed, but this ol' equine orifice is dangerous. Be careful with that juicy apple you stretch your arms to give the baleful horse.

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens is White (白). Yup. That's it. The miscellaneous activities are Edifice (房), Pestle (碓), and Bed (牀). Nobody knows what they mean. Really.

See You Tomorrow
O.k., bask in the red-ink glow of Stomach and Discard (and focus on the positive). I'll see you back here on Saturday night for a preview of Sunday in Lunar World.
