From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-25

As the Lunar World Turns
Monday, June 25, 2018
O.k., we're back to our "normal" whipsaw, "50-50" day-column. All is right (and wrong) with the world, just as it is meant to be. Let's take a closer look (what is bad...is pretty darned bad).
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Net (畢). It is the nineteenth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars associate this constellation with a big ol' hunting net that clears vermin from the landscape. It was associated with clearing the territory of traitors, deserters, and criminals. Today, it has turned into a fortunate sign of garnering abundance. Long life is assured (in Lunar World) for children of a union contracted today. Good stuff.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
The jianchu "personality" is Destroy (破), and it is every bit as bad as it sounds (the worst-of-the-worst). It is the seventh of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. Pretty much all your best-laid plans are destroyed, and everything that can go wrong (in Lunar World) surely will. Tough stuff.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Generational Virtue (歲德) and Unleashing Spirits (解神).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and five auspicious () times. After the last few inflationary-insanity days, this seems almost normal.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Buying Land (買田) and Setting-up Industry (置業). So don't.
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twelfth (十二) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #25: wuzi (戊子). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Fire (火). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Water. Today is Fire, and tomorrow is Fire.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Bed RF
It's a solid day for only two big, destructive things today: Destroying Rooms (破屋) and Smashing Embankments (壞垣). A note to anyone new to these posts: smash up your own property; leave others' alone.
Monday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the tenth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, June 21 and runs through Friday, July 6. It is called Summer Arrives or, of course, Summer Solstice (夏至). We are in the twenty-seventh of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Deer Shed Antlers (鹿角節). It began on Thursday, June 21 and runs through Monday, June 25.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Lunar Destruction (月破), Upper Amputee (上兀), Water Scar (水痕), and Calamitous Balefulness (灾煞). Again, think of them as movie titles (or a manga series). In a way, they are—at least in the sense that they are a terrifying genre all their own.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Ghost (鬼), as in "he was so scared that he was white as a ghost." The miscellaneous activities are Edifice (房), Pestle (碓), and Bed (牀). Nobody knows what they mean. I'm not kidding.
[e] Gone! RF
See You Tomorrow
O.k., see what you can do with this destructive netting. The only advice I have is that people have navigated worse in Lunar World for about...3,000 years. You can handle this. I'll see you back here on Monday night for a preview of Tuesday in Lunar World.
