From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-05

As the Lunar World Turns
Tuesday, June 5, 2018
[a] Cat Preview
O.k., people, Tuesday will be the mirror opposite of Monday. All of our bright red ink has turned dark, gloomy, and (at best) reflective. At worst, well, let's be optimists (but wary ones) and take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
[b] Wings RF
Today's "constellation personality" is Wings (翌). It is the twenty-seventh of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." In earlier times, many centuries ago, it had a positive aura of grand festivals and music. Today, though, it bodes ill, with gloomy pictures of chronic illness and general misery. Children born of marriages made on this day may be forced into exile. Watch your back.

The jianchu "personality" is Closed (閉). "Closed" is the twelfth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle, and it is as, well, closed as yesterday was open. Misfortune and evil are the code words of the day, but there is a precious little ray of optimism for people who want to tuck away from the hubub and be alone, or at least outside of the whirlwind. Watch your back.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Generational Virtue (歲德) and Timely Virtue (時德). Both are positive (by definition) and virtuous.

[c] Wood RF

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, two in-between () times, and six auspicious () times. Six? Really?
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Buying Land (買田) and Setting-up Industry (置業). It's a "closed" day; just stick to the house (or your cubicle).

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-second (廿二) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #5: wuchen (戊辰). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
[d] Sweeping Change RF
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Fire. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Wood.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for only two, big, bold, black-ink things: Unhitching and Unloading (拆卸) and Sweeping Rooms (掃舎).
Tuesday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eighth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Monday, May 21 and runs through Tuesday, June 5. It is called Grain Full (小滿). We are in the twenty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Harvest Season Arrives (麥秋至). This is an odd phrase for the beginning of June, and it is usually written Slight Heat Arrives or Grain Ripens (小暑至). It began on Thursday, May 31, and runs through Tuesday, June 5.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Generational Destruction (歲破), Five Voids (五虛), Blood Branch (血支), and Yang General (陽將). Some of these are especially bad, especially the first and the third.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Person (人) and Ghost (鬼). The miscellaneous activities are Edifice (房), Perch (栖), and Bed (牀). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] Bed RF
See You Tomorrow
O.k., hunker down, people, and we'll weather this, whether or not we hide away or just blithely face the world. We got this. I'll see you back here in this space on Tuesday night for a preview of Wednesday in Lunar World.
