From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-22

As the Lunar World Turns

[a] Cat Preview RF
Well it looks good, people, and it actually is even better than that. Solid stuff. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Mound (). It is the sixteenth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state the constellation is linked to the harvest and, by extension, to diverse modes of thanksgiving. The beauty of this one (as opposed to the real harvest) is that it comes along once every four weeks. There's no mutiny on this Bounty. The day is generally thought (in Lunar World) to presage family concord, pockets filled with silver and gold, and glory to those who dig trenches and open watercourses.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Level RF
The jianchu "personality" is Level (平). It is the fourth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. Even though it is always printed in black ink, it isn't half-bad. Wedding receptions, conferences, and meetings that began yesterday (under Fullness) can proceed happily and auspiciously today. If they're done, it is time to sit back and reflect. Even it out; level it. Take stock, but don't break the market. Stay level. So why is it printed in black ink? Well just as some people say about driving through eastern North Dakota, "level" can get a little bit boring (they're wrong, but that's what they say). I think "level" is terrific, and, for the most part, Lunar World does, too.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Peopled Days (民日), which is not The People's Daily, and Reverential Calm (敬安). Good stuff, and these two don't show up too often. Greet them warmly, as distant, but auspicious, kinfolk.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and four auspicious () times. Just the way it is supposed to be.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
[c] Planting RF
It's a bad day for Planting and Cultivating (栽种) and Getting Injections (時插). While my diabetic cats will, of course, be getting their injections today, just as they do every day, we might wait until tomorrow for their shingles or flu shots. The really interesting thing for me about this section is that the second character in "Planting and Cultivating" is rendered as a simplified character. The calendar almost always has 栽種, but today it is 栽种. Hmmm.
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the ninth (初九) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #22: yiyou (乙酉). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Water (水). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Water. Today is Water, and tomorrow is Earth.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for four things today: Haircuts and Styling (理髮), Sweeping Rooms (掃舎), Leveling Roadways (平道), and Adorning Embankments (飾垣). As for the latter, it is up to you to decide where "graffiti" might fit into the ol' pattern. Does "Lenny Wuz Here" count as "adorning?"
[d] Sweeping RF
Friday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the tenth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, June 21 and runs through Friday, July 6. It is called Summer Arrives or, of course, Summer Solstice (夏至). We are in the twenty-seventh of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Deer Shed Antlers (鹿角節). It began on Thursday, June 21 and runs through Monday, June 25.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Five Separations (五離), Death Delivery (致死), Heavenly Dipper (天罡), and Death Spirit (死神). If those, especially the second, aren't enough to give a little shudder, I am not sure what would.
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Person (人) and Spirit (神). The miscellaneous activities are Pestle (碓), Gate (門), and Mortar (磨). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] Delivery RF
See You Tomorrow
O.k., keep it level, people, and we'll dance around the Mound like our ancient ancestors. I'll see you back here Friday night for a preview of Saturday in Lunar World.
