From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 06-06

As the Lunar World Turns
Wednesday, June 6, 2018
[a] Cat Preview RF
O.k., people, we're back to Lunar World normalcy. It's a 50-50 day, and it runs right down the middle between "good" and "bad." Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Running Board (). It is the twenty-eighth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state it refers to the running board of a carriage, and is associated with vehicular matters of all kinds. Business matters are fortunate and funeral ceremonies are perfect for this day. Marriage, too.
[b] Four Facings RF

The jianchu "personality" is Closed (閉). "Closed" is the twelfth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. Every once-in-awhile, one of the jianchu personalities is repeated, and today is one of those days. The most opitmistic way to think about "Closed" is to hunker down, read, do a crossword puzzle, binge watch The Americans, and take a nap.

Again. For the second day. In a row.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Generational Emolument (歲祿), Four Facings (四相), and Kingly Days (王日). Good stuff.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
[c] Constructing Dikes RF
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and five auspicious () times.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Opening Granaries (開倉), Distant Journeys (遠行), and Discarding Clothing (除服). It's (still) a "closed" day; just stick to the house (or your cubicle). Stay away from your wallet (and that granary).

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-third (廿三) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #6: jisi (己巳). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Wood. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Earth.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for six different things, including: Tailoring (裁衣), Constructing Dikes (築提), and Patching and Plugging (補塞) caves and holes on your vast, sprawling southeastern Chinese estate.
Wednesday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the ninth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Wednesday, June 6 and runs through Wednesday, June 20. It is called Grain in Ear (芒種). We are in the twenty-fifth of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Mantids Hatch (螳螂生). It began on Wednesday, June 6, and runs through Sunday, June 10.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Water Scar (水痕), Lunar Taboo (月忌), and Doubled Days (重日).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens is Person (人). Yup, only that one. The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Bed (牀), and Gate (門). Nobody knows what they mean. Seriously. I have been studying these matters for thirty years, and I'm not kidding.

See You Tomorrow
Well, hunker down Lunar Worlders. Hop on that running board, and ride to glory (but no distant journeys). Or...stay home and rest. You'll have to decide. I'll see you back here on Wednesday night for a preview of Thursday in Lunar World.
