From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 03-29

As the Lunar World Turns
Thursday, March 29, 2018
[a] Preview RF
Well, it's a skinny little two-wide day-column for Thursday. That means two lucky stars, two things to avoid, and just a handful of "appropriate" things for the day. Columns for ordinary days (almost every day except Lunar New Year's Day) are two-, three-, or four-wide. The number of things to do (or avoid) are dependent on that width.

Today is slender, but no less interesting for that (like Jack Sprat).

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters 6 and 7)
[b] Lean Day Column RF
Today's "constellation personality" is black-ink, inauspicious "Astride" (奎). The constellation looks (it is said) like the sole of a shoe, and it is seen as an unlucky day to undertake construction projects (which will result in family squabbles and losing money, not to mention getting ill.

The jianchu "personality" is "Grasp" (執), and that is red-ink goodness. Reach for your potential today. It is said that the day is good for stretching the limits around the house and your work, but it is not a particularly good day for travel.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms: Generational Horse (歲馬) and Unleashing Spirits (解神).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
Today has five inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, five auspicious (吉) periods, and two in-between ones (中).
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Binding Nets (結網) and Positioning Beds (安牀) for maximum fengshui efficiency.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the thirteenth day (十三) of the second lunar month, and the "cycle of sixty" characters are #57: gengshen (庚申). We are almost ready to start a new, eight-week (plus) cycle of sixty.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Fire. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Wood before giving way to Water the day after tomorrow. After ten days, we'll be back where we are today (endlessly repeating).

Appropriate Things
[d] White Tiger RF
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for four big, bold-character items: Sweeping Rooms (掃社) and Seizing and Capturing, or Trapping (捕捉), Discarding Clothing (除服), and Completing Clothing (成服).

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are plentiful...and a little bit scary. Among them are Four Abandonments (四廢) and "Baleful Plunder" (劫煞). One of the most ominous of all shows the return of White Tiger (白虎), too.

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

The catch-all that makes up sections seven and eight have some of the usual suspects today. White (白) and Water (水) make up section seven, and the three items, related to miscellaneous activities, in section eight, are Pestle (碓), Furnace (爐), and Mortar (磨). And, no, mortar-and-pestle don't always go together on the calendar the way they do in real life.

See You Tomorrow
So, grasp beyond your usual limits today. Even with its "50-50" breakdown, it will err on the side of positive. Enjoy it, and I'll see you back here tomorrow night for a preview of Friday in Lunar World.
