From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

[a] Cat Preview RF
I hope that you are still feel the warm tingles of all red-ink Wednesday, but it's back to "50-50" business for Thursday. No worries. We're going to have fun. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Astride (奎). It is the fifteenth of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that the constellation looks like a man astride a horse. It is generally unlucky, and construction and digging are especially inauspicious today. Lawsuits will go badly; sickness will take hold.
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Astride RF
The jianchu "personality" is Grasp (). It is the sixth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle. Reach for the heavens, people. It is a good day for opening wells, cutting and planting, and holding weddings. Get' er goin', people.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today: Golden Hall (金堂) and Releasing Spirits (解神). Auspiciousness comes in small packages today.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are four inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, three in-between () times, and five auspicious () times.
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Opening Sluices (開渠) and Putting-into Water (放水). The water theme dominates (stay away).
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the seventh (初七) day of the sixth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #49: renzi (壬子). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Wood (木). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Metal. Today is Wood, and tomorrow is Wood.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for eight things today, including: Bathing (沐浴), Haircuts (理髮), Lacquering Coffins (漆棺), and Moving Biers (移柩). The latter does not refer to sitting at the bar and hoisting cold ones (trust me). That's what you do after you have moved the bier (and followed all of the appropriate ritual).
Thursday's Lunar Calendar
[d] Bathing RF
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eleventh of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Saturday, July 7 and runs through Saturday, July 21. It is called Slight Heat (小暑). We are in the thirty-second of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Hawks Begin to Study (應始摯). It began on Thursday, July 17 and runs through Monday, July 21.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Water Scar (水痕), Lower Amputee (下兀) and Return Taboo (歸忌).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Water (水). The miscellaneous activities are Granary (倉), Pestle (碓), and Storehouse (庫). Nobody knows what they mean (and where's the Mortar?)...
See You Tomorrow
O.k., folks, thread the "50-50" needle, have a good day, and I'll see you back here on Thursday night for a preview of Friday in Lunar World.
