From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

[a] Cat Preview RF
Well, it's deja lu all over again. You've already read this, at least part of it. It's a "50-50" day, but with a twist. Let's take a closer look.
Day Personality
Constellation Personality (Section Five—Character Six)
Today's "constellation personality" is Foundation (氐), and it's not nearly as good as it sounds. It is the third of twenty-eight "lunar mansions" (宿) or "constellations." Traditional calendars state that it is generally unlucky, and not at all fortunate for marriages, construction projects, or events (in Lunar World).
Jianchu Personality (Section Five—Character Seven)
[b] Grasp RF
The jianchu "personality" is Grasp ()...just as it was yesterday. Once in a while, a jianchu personality repeats, as it does today (the constellations never repeat). It is the sixth of twelve characters in the jianchu cycle and, as I mentioned yesterday, it is good and graspable. Reach high...and far.
Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are three beneficent asterisms today: Golden Hall (金堂), Unleashing Spirits (解神), and Lunar Vacancy (月空). They are your lucky asterisms, although the middle one better be filled with good ones (it almost sounds baleful, doesn't it?)...

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There arefour inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and four auspicious () times. 4-4-4. Now that wasn't so difficult, was it? Back to normal.
[c] Binding Nets RF
Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Binding Nets (結網), Divinatory Inquiries (問卜), and Repairing Granaries (修倉)
Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-fourth (廿四) day of the fourth lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #37: gengzi (庚子). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.
Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Earth (土). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Wood. Today is Earth, and tomorrow is Earth.
Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Study RF
It's a solid day for six different things today: Studying (入學), Going Out (出行), Tailoring (裁衣), Haircuts (理髮), Discarding Clothing (除服), and Positioning Graves (安葬) for geomantic (fengshui) clarity.
Saturday's Lunar Calendar
Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the eleventh of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Saturday, July 7 and runs through Saturday, July 21. It is called Slight Heat (小暑). We are in the thirty-first of the seventy-two five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Warm Winds Arrive (溫風至). It began on Monday, July 2 and runs through Friday, July 6.
Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Upper Amputee (上兀), Return Taboo (歸忌), and Everything General (俱將).
Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Water (水). The miscellaneous activities are Divination (占), Mortar (磨), and Pestle (碓). Nobody knows exactly what they mean, but at least the last two usually go together.
See You Tomorrow
O.k., you've got one more day to grasp, reach, and stretch. Don't waste it. I'll see you back here on Saturday night for a preview of Sunday in Lunar World.
