From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-12

As the Lunar World Turns
Thursday, April 12, 2018
[a] Preview Cat RF
Whiplash again, people. Really good and really bad (the worst of all). Let's take a closer look.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Horn (角). Calendrical interpretations stress that it is an auspicious day, good for all sorts of activities (not the least construction and buying land). It is the first of the twenty eight constellation "personalities."
[b] Horse RF

The jianchu "personality" is Destroy (破), which is as bad as it gets in this cycle. Calendrical interpretations stress that just about anything you set out to do turns out badly (unintended consequences). Drive two miles over the speed limit, and they'll nail you (but twenty miles yesterday was fine).

Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
There are two beneficent asterisms today, including Heavenly Horse (天馬) and Not General (不將). They're good.

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are three inauspicious (凶) two-hour periods, four in-between () times, and five auspicious () times.
[c] Fire RF

Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Opening Granaries (開倉) and Capital Outflow (出財). In other words, don't tap the reserves.

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the twenty-seventh (廿七) day of the second lunar month. The cycle of sixty character is #11: jiaxu (甲戌). The days cycle—1, 2, 3, 58, 59, 60, 1, 2, 3...—in perpetuity.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Fire (火). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Metal. Today is Fire, and tomorrow is Fire.

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
[d] Destroying Walls RF
It's a solid day for only a few things, including Doctor's Visits (求醫), Destroying Rooms (破屋), and Smashing Embankments (壞垣). Just make sure that the stuff you smash is your own. Otherwise, you break it, you buy it.
Thursday's Lunar Calendar

Solar Periods
(Section Six—Upper and Middle)
We are in the fifth of the twenty-four fifteen day solar periods (the 二十四節氣), which began on Thursday, April 4 and runs April 19. It is called Qingming (清明). We are in the fourteenth of the five-day solar micro periods (the 七十二候). It is called Moles Become Quails (桐始華), and began on Tuesday, April 10, and runs through Saturday, April 14.

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are Lunar Destruction (月破), Great Squander (大耗), and Debt Not (債不).  The latter, unlucky or not, is always good advice.

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

Today's miscellaneous omens are Bifurcation (丫) and Heaven (天). The miscellaneous activities are Gate (門), Perch (栖), and Pestle (碓). Nobody knows what they mean.
[e] Bi-fork-ation RF
See You Tomorrow
So, keep your head on straight (and avoid swiveling between good-bad). Go see the doctor, but don't rifle through the granary. I'll see you back here Thursday night for a preview of Friday in Lunar World.
