From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Lunar World Preview 2018 04-04

[a] Doubled Preview RF
Well, people, we're back to skinny little two-wide days in Lunar World, but don't let that make you treat it lightly. It's still packed with interesting stuff.

Day Personality
(Section Five—Characters Six and Seven)
Today's "constellation personality" is Mix (), and it is a Chinese version of the constellation Orion. It is printed in red ink on the calendar, but it is really listed in most guides as "variable." Building today brings positives, but burials, marriages, and engagements are not at all recommended (in Lunar World). Variable (but red-ink). Hmmm.

The jianchu "personality" is Closed (閉), which is black ink, but not all bad. "Closed" has a sense of hiding away from misfortune and evil—hunkering down, really. The modern meanings extend toward starting good habits (such as a new diet or a savings plan). The hunkering down idea brings, to certain introverts, the nice feeling of taking some "me" time.

Lucky Stars
(Section Two)
The beneficent asterisms are Kingly Days (王日) and Not General (不將). They are good (by definition).

Auspicious Times
(Section Three)
There are three inauspicious (凶) times, six in-between () times, and three auspicious () times.

Things to Avoid
(Section Four)
It's a bad day for Stove Work (作灶) and Venerating Ancestors (祭祀). Think about these. It is rarely a bad day for venerating your ancestors...but it is never a bad day for study (see below).

Just Plain Counting
(Section Four—Characters 1-4)
It is the nineteenth (十九) day of the second lunar month. It is also #3: bingyin (丙寅) in the cycle of sixty endlessly repeating days.

Elemental (and Phased)
(Section Five—Character 5)
Today's slice of the "Five Phases" (sometimes called the "Five Elements") is Fire (火). Ordinarily, the Five Phases weave their way, two-by-two, through the calendar. Yesterday was Metal. Today is Fire, and tomorrow is Fire.
[d] Patching and Plugging RF

Appropriate Things
(Section Six)
It's a solid day for eight different things, including Studying (入學), Moving Soil (動土), Patching and Plugging (補塞) those holes and gaping caves on your sprawling, eighteenth century southeastern Chinese estate. And there are five more things, too (click the link below).

Fear Your Unlucky Stars
(Bottom of Section Six)
The baleful asterisms (the bottom of section six) are right in the mix of common negative imagery on the calendar. Among them are Debt Not (債不) and Blood Branch (血支). The "big one" today is Short Star (短星).

Miscellaneous Omens and Activities
(Sections Seven and Eight)

The miscellaneous omens are White (白) and Earth (地). The miscellaneous activities are Kitchen (廚), Furnace (爐), and Stove (灶). No one knows what they mean. Seriously, I say that every day. Read some of the older posts for why I say that.

See You Tomorrow
Mix it up, hunker down, and get ready for a day that tilts toward the unlucky (but not that bad). When you get through it, head back to this space on Wednesday night for a preview of Thursday in Lunar World.
