From Round to Square (and back)

For The Emperor's Teacher, scroll down (↓) to "Topics." It's the management book that will rock the world (and break the vase, as you will see). Click or paste the following link for a recent profile of the project: http://magazine.beloit.edu/?story_id=240813&issue_id=240610

A new post appears every day at 12:05* (CDT). There's more, though. Take a look at the right-hand side of the page for over four years of material (2,000 posts and growing) from Seinfeld and country music to every single day of the Chinese lunar calendar...translated. Look here ↓ and explore a little. It will take you all the way down the page...from round to square (and back again).
*Occasionally I will leave a long post up for thirty-six hours, and post a shorter entry at noon the next day.

Final Management Introduction Assignment 2025a

[a] Discussion RF

The Art of Warning
Final Assignment
Management Book Introduction

Keeping in mind that this course is about making what we have studied "real" for you, I am asking you to write the introduction to a management book. Your management book. You will need to put your thoughts together from the course readings and discussions, and then find a way to articulate your perspective on management (managing yourself, your family, and "all under heaven") to others.

You don't have to write a complete management book for this assignment (of course), but I want you to think about how you would (or maybe even will) write one down the road, perhaps when you have a little bit more experience behind you. For that reason, you will prepare an outline of the chapters your book would have (one page). We'll be talking about this outline throughout the second half of the term, but the idea is to give a sense of the themes that you would put in your own management book.

This outline is important, and a significant first step. You should think about all of our readings, and consider what themes you will outline in your "book" (the themes will be the "chapters"). Once that is done (you may tinker with the outline up to the point you submit it), you will have the structure for the heart of your final assignment—the introduction to your book, in which you will express your perspectives on management.
[b] Confucius-Centered RF

We will read a few introductions, in order to give you a sense of how they work, but you will be fine if you simply think of this final assignment as a way to tie together all that you have been doing in this course. Think of it as a way to give advice to others, beginning what I hope will be a habit of mentoring that you will follow throughout your life.

 ***  ***

Papers must be at least 3,000-3,500 words long (about ten to twelve pages) and focus upon what you have learned in this class. You will have fully six weeks between the midterm assignment and when this is due in May, but you should be taking notes to prepare for your final assignment all semester long. We will be discussing all of this throughout the weeks of the class, as well.

There is no excuse for leaving this assignment to the last minute. Please write at least two real drafts (refer to the writing guide), and please do not turn in the first thing you write (again, see Part One of my writing guide).

Send to me (lafleur@beloit.edu) as a .pdf file
(not a hard copy)!
