But now that I have your attention anyway, I want to tell you that the official Alabama state mammal is...the Black Bear.

Yup, I know. First we have the Northern Flicker as our state bird, and now the Black Bear as our state mammal. Did someone get us mixed up with, say, Maine?

I haven't seen too many bears in these here parts. Maybe the legislature was thinking of Bear Bryant. Maybe.


Oh, and don't give those legislators too much credit for knowing ursine ethology and thinking that the bear was prevalent in Alabama many centuries ago. No, most politicians aren't all that sharp; they named it state mammal in...1996. 

I'm o.k. with it. It reminds me of coach, and the houndstooth cap.
